Choosing to Write

I just can’t shake this feeling that I’m supposed to start writing.

Ok. That’s cool!

So, what are you gonna write about? Honestly, I’m not quite sure yet.

What I am sure of, is that many of those typical thoughts we face when we set out to do something new, have already tried to set up shop in my mind.

Any of this sound familiar to you?

“What could you possibly have to offer that would be of interest to others? No one cares what you have to say. There are so many blogs in existence already, that no one will ever read yours. You aren’t a website kind of person. You’ve tried new stuff before and failed, what makes you think this time is different? If you write, others will disagree at times… is it really worth it? You don’t have time for this. It’s much safer and easier to just not do it and move on.”

Man. Talk about encouraging yourself!

No, I may not know exactly what I will be writing about, much less how to even really go about all this, but let me share with you a little about me and why I am choosing to write.

(Ashley, Brantley and I)

I’ve been married since 2012 to the love of my life, Ashley. We are the adoptive and foster parents of 2 little boys. Yep! I am a Dad and I love it!

I serve as the youth pastor at a church in North Carolina. (Yes, that is a real job.) I have had the opportunity to be a HS coach for softball and basketball. I gave my life to Christ as a little boy in a small church in Kinston, NC and have been following Jesus since. I’m a son and a brother. On top of working to improve my health, I am striving to grow and make the most of this life God has blessed me with.

Shortly after our boys were placed with us in 2018, I started telling our boys every day that “Today is gonna be A GOOD DAY!” He quickly picked up on this saying and made it his own. Since then, we have done our best to face every day with that core belief about what each day will hold. #todaysgonnabeagoodday

I remind our boys, and myself, that this is true, because Jesus loves us and is with us no matter what the day brings our way, and that we can always find something good in it!

(Ashley and I with Miranda)

I didn’t teach myself this truth. It was ultimately taught to me by my big sister, Miranda. You may not know her yet… but if you stick around long enough, you will. Her story is a part of my foundation and one of the biggest reasons I view life like I do.

So this is my attempt to capture as many of the incredible moments that are happening in my life as I can, and give them a place to call home. This place. This blog. Filled with words. Words that tell the story of the good discovered during the course of a day. Good that can be found in the wins and struggles, the laughter and tears, family and friends, and of course, lessons that God is teaching me along the way that might even help you too.

I’m a very simple person. The lessons I learn tend to be that way as well. Simple is good. Simple can be very powerful, and it has a reputation of not being overwhelming!

Know today, that you are always welcome here at the table. Even if the stories and simple lessons that flow from the tips of my fingers onto these backlit keys add value to your life or not. My goal is to add value to me and to you. So here are a few promises as we begin this journey together.

I promise…

-to be myself.

-to write as consistently as I can.

-there will be a wide range of topics. (Kids, Marriage, Faith, Growth, Food, Fitness Family, etc.)

-that my grammar will not always be proper, and you may get frustrated at punctuation misuse.

-that I will do my best to add value to your life whether it a smile, laugh or lesson!

Let’s do this!
